Just as Storm Claudia swept through the northwest the night before, Manchester City blew United aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their title credentials as they strengthened their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Losses for Manchester United

This scoreline marked consecutive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their title hopes in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capacity to balance domestic and European football with a thin squad has been a hotly discussed subject since they earned a place in the Champions League. Reviewing the fixture list, it always felt like this was the period that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed tired throughout, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had attempted to rotate the squad with a several changes. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the dropping of the high-performing Malard to the bench was questioned.

City, in comparison, have fewer loading concerns. The City coach made one change from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since healing from injury.

Dominant First Half

The pressure started to build for Skinner and his side from the first whistle. This was a show of the power from Manchester City whose dynamic attack controlled and tore United open with a superb first half performance that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

The influential Casparij picked the ball up on the right before providing a accurate low cross for Shaw to tap home. Shortly later, they had a third after a rapid change in the ball saw Hemp allowed the space to strike a shot home from outside the box.

Second Half

The clearest substitution came from Skinner at the break as Melvine Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the contest. Former City player Jess Park came most likely to score, striking the upright, but the away team were creatively abject and failed to record a solitary shot on target.

The hosts, in contrast, could have increased their advantage when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the hosts. Having failed to defeat any opponent who placed above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against Arsenal and United to position them in a favorable standing after nine matches.
